A sudden illness immediately after the meetings at school with parents and students, then the unexpected death at only 55 years old. Since Michela Ferrante, Italian and Latin teacher at the Jommelli high school in Aversa, passed away a year and a half ago, on December 13, 2022, a long night began for her students. None of them has ever forgotten her, just as their colleagues have not. And today, in the days of the final exam, the students of the fifth F wanted to reiterate how fundamental the figure of the teacher was for them.

Maturity 2024, teacher dies the night before exams: a colleague leaves each student a heart and a biscuit

They did it with an unusual request at the end of the exam: to be accompanied to the cemetery. «They wanted to thank their teacher who is no longer with us, but who they felt close to all the days she was gone. A sensitivity that repays all the effort put into five years of teaching”, philosophy and human sciences teacher Enza Picone told Corriere della Sera. She was the one who accompanied the students and shared the photo of the visit on Facebook, accompanied by a message addressed to her colleague, but which cannot leave indifferent even those who were not lucky enough to cross her path.

At the cemetery after high school

“Certain bonds are never broken. It happens rarely, but it happens that the love of and for a person continues, even in their absence. And that’s how a class of fifth-year high school girls and boys decide, as soon as they know the results of their final exams, to go and share it with someone who is no longer here, with their Italian and Latin teacher, who left too soon and too quickly,” writes the teacher in the long post.

“This photo is not meant to show off intimate feelings. It wants to show, if there was still any need, the extraordinary nature of a woman and a teacher, Michela Ferrante, who continues to be loved and remembered by her students. This photo wants to show that, when school works, adolescents are able to develop sensitivity and deep emotional skills, welcoming pain to transform it into mature and conscious growth. This photo is also my very personal pride: none of my students complained or was surprised by the grade they received but they all asked me to be there, for the last time, with them, in silence, with shining eyes, each with their own memory. Michela, we did a good job: today in front of me there were men and women who will always carry with them what we taught them, the wonder of life, the passion of ideas and the desire for change.”

The students’ letter

The students of the fifth F class, at the end of their studies, gave their teachers a letter that confirms the excellent work done by the teachers. After thanking the professors, they couldn’t help but also give a thought to “her”, the teacher “who we could never forget, who with her kindness and her lightheartedness brightened our days and who would have cheered for us until the end. It comforts us to think that a part of her is here with us today and is listening to us, even if from afar”.
