“The wind of fear blows.” Scurati goes to France and returns to be a martyr

You remember it Antonio Scurati? Come on, you can’t have already forgotten it, it’s a recent fact, despite the great speed of the world of communication which devours time. Our celebrated writer, known for his obsession with Benito Mussolini, was the protagonist of a Greek drama about the alleged censorship suffered in the right-wing RAI, with the monologue on April 25th sabotaged in Serena Bortone’s program “Che will be” , known more for this episode than for the terrible audience results. Well, after becoming the point of reference for the left against the government, Scurati also took on the role of martyr beyond the Alps, reeling off a series of significant outbursts.

Yesterday the author of the “M.” trilogy on Mussolini received in France the honor of Knight of Arts and Letters. The ceremony took place in the halls of the Parisian Ministry of Culture and also featured the Minister of Culture Rachine Dati. Like any excellent left-wing intellectual, Scurati took the opportunity to throw mud at the center-right government, expressing great concern for today’s times which resemble “those experienced by our grandparents, when there was a crisis of confidence in the future and a decline of hope”. Mussolini knew that the path of hope to reach power was impossible for him and he understood that there existed and still exists something in politics that is more powerful than hope, the writer continued: “And it is fear. Compared to 100 years ago the differences are numerous and profound. However, I see the same wind blowing on the fears of the people, on the passions of the country, on the feeling of disappointment of the impoverished middle classes, on the frightened citizens, distressed by wars, by pandemics, betrayed by broken promises. This unhealthy wind does not just sow fear.”

Faced with this obscene and melancholy proposal, added Scurati, art and literature respond with a single word, which gave its name to a famous French novel in the heart of the deepest European crisis of the 1930s ‘L’Espoir’, the hope. The French press – poorly informed – has revived the censorship tall tale, but that’s not all. In her speech, the minister Data he alluded veiledly to the current French political situation: “By telling us not to forget anything, to remember the abysses into which Europe has fallen in the past, Scurati invites us to always keep our eyes open to the risks faced by our democratic societies.” A reference to the upcoming legislative elections in France, with the Lepenist far right favored to win. And perhaps to other realities, who knows. What is certain is that Scurati did not give his country due credit, thinking more about victimhood than anything else.
