The flagellation of Christ Of Caravaggio arrived at the Royal Palace of Venaria to enrich the exhibition Capodimonte from Royal Palace to Museum. Five centuries of masterpieces from Masaccio to Andry Warhol opened on March 29th and already visited by 50 thousand people.
«We brought 60 Capodimonte cherries to Turin» said Eike Schmidt, director of the Neapolitan museum, on the day of the inauguration with the Minister of Culture Sangiuliano. The last “icing” was missing: «It is only arriving now because the canvas was exhibited at the Diocesan Museum of Naples until May 31st», says Giulia Zanasi, head of the Exhibitions Office at the Consortium of Royal Savoy Residences.
From now until September 15th it can be admired by tourists, students, art enthusiasts, the public suffering from Stendhal syndrome. The Royal Palace staff makes it known that they have reservations for months for this canvas dated 1607, «testimony of the artist’s latest style, the pinnacle of European art history», explain Clara Goria and Donatella Zanardo, curators of the Palace and members of the exhibition’s curatorial committee.

The flagellation represents the moment in which Christ, tied to a column, undergoes the torture of the scourges by two executioners and is also a masterpiece for Capodimonte: in fact it is the only Caravaggio kept in the Neapolitan museum where he was transferred in 1972 for security reasons after having suffered three attempted thefts. It is an event within an event for Venaria: only one other painting by Caravaggio entered the Savoy residence, in 2013: Rest during the flight into Egypt.
