Over 70% of people with hearing loss live with some degree of tinnitus or tinnitus. It is a symptom and not a specific disease which can however significantly influence the quality of life due to the perception of buzzing, hissing or whistling, often caused by stress and fatigue, ear infections, aging. An ailment that must be addressed holistically with the contribution of professionals in deafness therapy, including hearing aid therapy, but also of experts in neuropsychology, geriatrics, gnathology and rhythmic-musical education. It is being discussed at the first WSA Summit, at the NH Veneto Hotel in Rome. The event, organized by Anthea Group and supported by Widex Italia, Sivantos and Acufenia, aims to promote greater awareness of the complexity of the symptom, encourage collaboration between specialists from different disciplines and present the latest research in the field of diagnosis and treatment of tinnitus, triggered by various causes. “Tinnitus, or tinnitus, a dysperceptive moment of our auditory system, according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD 10, 1990) is a pathology of ENT expertise – explains Aldo Messina, scientific director of the congress and specialist in audiology for the “Regina Margherita” of Palermo – But today, by common understanding, rather than a disease it is considered a symptom, so much so that it seems simplistic to delegate its diagnostic, therapeutic-rehabilitative and prognostic classification to a single specialist”. Often linked to exposure to loud sounds, which can damage the delicate sensory cells in the inner ear, tinnitus can also be associated with excess earwax, high blood pressure and disorders affecting the sensory nerves. Habits such as smoking, consuming alcohol or caffeine, as well as taking excessive quantities of acetylsalicylic acid or antibiotics can then aggravate the problem. Among the innovative approaches that will be presented at the congress, self-compassion mindfluency programs, sound stimulation and Widex Zen Therapy (WZT), the treatment based on counseling, amplification, relaxation strategies and fractal tones, to help correct maladaptive thoughts and behaviors related to tinnitus, a relief from anxiety and stress.
