Burns all over the body after taking anti-depressant drugs: 23-year-old seriously injured in hospital

Is called Charlotte Gilmour the 23 year old who is in serious conditions tohospital due to an excessive reaction to the medicines you take. The girl, currently out of danger, told Stuff the terrible story. Here’s what happened to her.

Charlotte, burned from the inside by a drug

Painful blisters all over the body, red skin, crusts on arms and shoulders similar to burns and, moreover, his face seems to have been atrociously tortured: this is Charlotte Gilmour, a beautiful girl who had never experienced an allergic reaction of this type. The 23-year-old lives in Palmerston North (New Zealand) and is hospitalized in her city. Her skin overreacted to the lamotriginea substance used for compotes antiepileptic drugs and to treat mood instability, but also used for common headaches. Usually it is a component characterized by high tolerability, but this was not the case for Charlotte. She the girl she explains that she felt burn from the inside, as if someone were cooking his meat. “It was as if my arm had been cooked,” Charlotte says now while she is feeling better. «I looked at myself in the mirror and burst into tears. I think subconsciously I already knew it was something quite a bit serious».

A terrible and painful experience

The phenomenon that Charlotte experienced is described with the Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). In theory it is a reaction that occurs very rarely, caused by the presence of lamotrigine in painkillers, antibiotics and antiepileptic drugs, but in practice not much is known about this syndrome. In fact, the healthcare staff did not know what treatments to subject the girl to. «The most part scary is that the STS burned me from the inside out, so all the burns on the outside were due to my insides being so bad that they started showing up on my skin too,” the girl explained. In the hospital, he lost his sight and she tried never to fall asleep, afraid that she would never wake up again. After 30 days of taking steroidsCharlotte has recovered, but her life has not gone back to what it was before: “I still get blisters in my eyes and the rash always flares up in the same place where the worst burn occurred,” she said .

However, she works hard to find positive sides: “Now I’m grateful for the little things I have that I took for granted,” she concluded.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

The SJS is very rare: Affects less than 1 in a million people. It can be traced back to lamotrigine, but in reality its cause is unknown in 30% of cases. When it is caused by drugs, the symptoms begin after 8 weeks from the beginning of employment. The first ailments to appear are heachachecough, joint pain and, only later, skin rashes.
