The Road of Heroes is today a panoramic trekking route located on Mount Pasubio, between Veneto and Trentino. This road, dedicated to 15 Gold Medals of the WWI, offers spectacular views and the opportunity to take a journey of great historical importance. What is the route of the Road of Heroes?

This communication route was opened in the 1930s to connect the Pasubio Massif with Pian delle Fugazze. The road, also open to motor vehicles until the 1980s, today can only be traveled on foot or by mountain bike. The length is approximately 10 kilometers and, along its route it overcomes a difference in altitude of 800 metres. Despite this, the journey is not excessively difficult, although it is necessary to have a minimum amount of training.

The arrival point is the Pope refuge, which is located at 1928 meters above sea level. The road winds along the mountain walls. Before reaching your destination you also cross the famous one Havet Gallery, from which the route itself starts, which measures 2 kilometres. In fact, it is possible to take a shuttle bus up to this point and only tackle the last part of the route on foot.

How was the route done? The technical characteristics

The route of the “Road of Heroes” presents various technical characteristics that make it unique and fascinating. The type of terrain is mainly made from dirt road, with some sections requiring more attention due to the rocky and irregular nature of the terrain. During the walk you can admire spectacular views of the Val Canale and Val di Fienowhich offer unforgettable scenarios every season.

Once you reach your destination, especially if you are traveling by bike, you can return via another road, effectively creating a circular route. In fact, to return to Pian delle Fugazze you can take the Scarubbi Roada variant of the Strada delle 52 Gallerie, the latter closed to bicycles.

What to see around the Road of Heroes?

The area surrounding the Heroes’ Road is full of fascinating places that are worth a visit. After exploring the historic trail, you can do other trekking routes or see the surrounding villages.

  • Road of 52 Tunnels: built in 1917, it allowed Italian soldiers of the Great War to cross the area without being intercepted.
  • Pasubio valleys: A municipality located at the foot of Mount Pasubio, famous for its picturesque views and its history linked to the First World War.
  • Schio: a town anciently known for the manufacturing of fabrics, it hosts several examples of industrial archaeology.
  • Rovereto: very important center of Trentino, it hosts a medieval castle, the MART museum and the Bell of the Fallen.
