Snow White 2024 is Colombian and the dwarfs are no longer dwarfs: the politically correct version of Disney’s live action causes discussion

The Daily Mail publishes some shots apparently from the filming of the new live action, scheduled for 2024, produced by Disneyor the remake of the first, famous cartoon from the Burbank production house, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs“, the progenitor of the sequence of classics, released in theaters in 1937. And the controversy immediately broke out on social media for the choice of the cast.

As has already happened for the recent live action – this is the case, for example, of “the Little Mermaid”, whose very recent live action is set in a Caribbean location and shows a protagonist with unclear skin, American actress Halle Bailey – also this new remake of a Disney classic – taken from the well-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm – would have a protagonist with non-candid skin, as the name of the princess herself would require, described as “white as snow”. This is the protagonist chosen by Disney, the American actress Rachel Zegler, of partly Colombian origins. The accusation, as already for “the Little Mermaid”, is of blackwashing and revisionism.

To this type of criticism is added the surprise for the choice of actors who would play the seven dwarfs, the miner friends of the beautiful princess who – in the leaked photos and online appearances – appear to be actors not affected by achondroplasia, at least as far as six of them are concerned, and with a decidedly hipster look. There is, therefore, a slice of social users who cry out for the umpteenth case of revision of a masterpiece, in the name of politically correctness.

In Italy, among those riding the protest trend, there is the deputy prime minister Matthew Salvini. But even the Pro Vita movement didn’t wait long.

However, it should be specified that a Disney spokesman, in response to the photos published by the Daily Mail, specified in an interview with the Daily Beast that they are fake. In fact, they would be shots taken during the production phase, portraying not the leading actress, but a stand-in. While, as far as the actors who play the dwarfs are concerned, they would, in the same way, be shots stolen in the technical test phase – according to what the Instagram profile The Disinsider, specialized in bringing background stories from the Disney world, explains – destined to be modified in post-production, when the characters portrayed, thanks to the CGI, will take on more imaginative features, leaving only a few glimpses of humanity, to become what the fairy tale predicts: fantasy characters.
