For months Eric Danefamous and loved in Italy for the role of Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomytalks about his daily struggle after receiving the diagnosis of ALS. At his side is his ex-wife Rebecca Gayheartwho fought with insurance companies to provide him with 24/7 care. In April 2025, Dane said he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive degenerative disease.

There was recently a 12 hour shift that I couldn’t cover. I could only do four hours because of all the things the kids are doing.”
The support of friends
In recent months, Dane revealed that he can only move one arm. This is among the reasons why she needs continuous support over time: in this regard, the ex-wife has always revealed that many friends have agreed to help her in case of need, but not all have remained by their side. “I had to call two of Eric’s friends, one of whom had never cared for him like that. I thought, ‘I can’t believe I having to ask someone to do something like that‘. And of course, when I asked for help, they said, ‘Yes, anythingwhat do you need? What’s happening?’. And they both showed up and did a wonderful job.”
Together with his therapist, he is coping the emotion of this moment: She is dedicating herself to caring for her ex-husband and raising her two daughters, but some people have disappeared from her life. “There are a lot of people who used to be more present in my life, who I think about and ask myself, ‘Where did they go?’, but most people are not good at this situation because it is very heavy.” He added of Don’t hold a grudge against anyone who doesn’t show up. Even though they are now exes, the couple has always remained very close, despite having gone through some complex moments: Eric and Rebecca met for the first time in 2003 and got married a few months later in Las Vegas.
