The ranking of the best-selling cars in Europe, the models at the top

The automotive sector in Europa is experiencing a rollercoaster year. A little up and a little down. The month of May was marked by peaks of negativity, which partially dampened the enthusiasm that revolves around the automotive sector. According to data from JATO Dynamics for the 28 European markets, registrations stopped at 1,087,699 units (-2,5%).

This decline was due, in part, to the nosedive of electric vehicles (-10%) and those ibridi plug-in (-7%). In the ranking of the best-selling models, the Volkswagen Golf registered 20,000 units, becoming the second most registered car, behind the “sister” Volkswagen T-Roc. The Wolfsburg giant, therefore, tows the entire Old Continent on four wheels.

Few surprises

It must be said that May did not bring many surprises. The car market in Europe highlighted the usual notes, which performed according to the usual standards. The one that went beyond expectations was the old generation of Citroen C3, waiting for the new one to gain momentum, which thanks to the promotions gave a surprising exploit entering the top ten of the best sellers of the month. Our Fiat Pandathe undisputed queen in Italy, has struggled in the rest of the continent, in fact it ranks only in twentieth place. Even the Tesla Model Y has done better than the local city car, which last year managed to establish itself globally as the best-selling of all.

Those who have made great growth are the various ones Seat/Cupra LeonToyota RAV4, Seat Ibiza, Opel Astra and Jeep Avenger, all models that have little in common with each other, but which have been able to record a higher approval rating than in previous months. The formula for success lies in the transversality inherent in their nature, in fact all are able to know how to handle themselves very well in multiple fields of action. Among the new models, the performances of the Lexus LBX were excellent, Volvo EX30Renault Rafale and Omoda 5 which have achieved very encouraging results.

The top 20 best-selling cars in Europe

Now let’s go back to the top 20 best-selling cars in Europe in May 2024. At the top, as we anticipated, we find the Volkswagen T-Rocan imperishable crossover which despite its age (helped by various updates) manages to have a more than excellent response, while in second place we discover the evergreen Volkswagen Golf eighth generation, fresh from a restyling that seems to be a winner. On the third step of the podium there is a machine that at all latitudes, thanks to an advantageous price and enviable solidity, destroys hearts: Dacia Sandero.

Wooden medal for the Renault Clio, another model that always hovers in the noble positions of the best-selling list. A mockery for the Kia Sportage, which failed to enter the top 10 for a handful of vehicles. Below is the rest of the ranking, with the respective registrations alongside:
