In 2023 i taxpaying domestic workers I am decreased, just as a drop in domestic workers and carers was recorded compared to 2022. This is what emerges from the latest report on domestic work of theInps, with data indicating a decline in workers in the past year. A report which highlights, among other things, the clear division between the figures of workers, by sex, origin and age compared to the previous year, with the Institute having to deal with a loss of almost 70 thousand figures of the sector, with fewer contributions paid.

Taxpayers among domestic workers are decreasing

According to the report on domestic work presented by INPS and also analyzed by president Gabriele Fava, domestic workers who contributed in 2023 were 833,874. Almost one million, important numbers, which however would be negative compared to 2022. Comparing the sector with the results obtained the previous year, in fact, a drop of 7.6% is reported, i.e. 68,327 fewer workers compared to 2022.

And by analyzing the data of domestic workers by type of relationship and geographical area of origin, in the INPS report it is also possible to note how the share of workers by type has changed. In 2023, in fact, a prevalence of the domestic worker type of work was observed, which involved 50.4% of the total workers in the year, compared to 49.6% of the caregiver type. Just ten years ago the share of domestic workers was decidedly in the majoritywith 59.2% of workers.

And between housemaids and carers, it should be underlined that Italians prefer the first type, with local workers being more attracted to it. The majority of domestic workers, however, are made up of foreign workers, with the exception of those coming from Eastern Europe, Middle Eastern Asia, North Africa and Central America, in which the role of carer prevails .

Carers and housekeepers, a decreasing share

Analyzing the INPS report in more detail, it emerges that in 2023 the number of carers compared to the previous year recorded a 4.4% drop, which affects almost all areas of origin. The highest decrease concerns workers from North America (-21.1%). But more important was the decline in domestic workers (-10.5%), which particularly affected workers from North Africa (-33.0%) and Eastern Asia (-26.2%).

The smallest decrease, however, was recorded by workers coming from Philippines (-4.5%).

Looking at age and sex, however, it emerges that the age class 55-59 years it is the one with the greatest frequency among domestic workers, with a weight equal to 18.1% of the total, while 23.9% are aged aged 60 or over and only 1.5% have an age under 25 years of age. Overall, domestic workers under 45 represent 26.6% of the total, while ten years ago domestic workers under 45 were almost half (45.3%).

Among the declining shares are also those regarding the gender of domestic workers, with a similar decline between males and females. The composition by gender highlights a clear prevalence of females, whose weight on the total has started to increase again since 2022 and reached the maximum value in 2023, as in 2019, of the last six years, equal to 88.6%. In 2023 i males, falling below 96,000, recorded a drop of over 23% compared to the previous year. The reason? The phenomenon of regularization has probably affected male workers who have decided to move away from the sector the most.
