EU duties on Chinese cars, Urso on Sky TG24: ‘It is right to intervene on a violation of the free market’

The Minister of Business and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso returned to the growing tensions between the European Union and China after Beijing’s decision to open an anti-dumping investigation into the import of meat products as a response to Brussels’ crackdown on electric vehicles Chinese. Urso reiterated the position of the Italian government during Sky TG24 Economia, vindicating the work of the European institutions, despite the risk of a possible commercial escalation. “The tightening adopted on Chinese electric cars was the result of months of technical investigations which made it possible to ascertain violations of the free market by Chinese competitors”, underlined the minister. “It was precisely these investigations that made it possible to identify a threshold necessary to re-establish conditions of fair competition. It is”, he added, “a measure undertaken within the scope of the WTO rules for the correct restoration of violated market rules” .

“We encourage sustainable cars compared to old and polluting vehicles”

“It is necessary”, concluded Urso, “to identify every form of violation of the rules and restore, where appropriate, authentic fair competition, because those who produce in compliance with market rules and environmental and social standards must be protected”. Urso then defended the Ecobonus measure, reiterating the importance of supporting families for the purchase of sustainable cars. “We are helping families with low incomes to have ecologically sustainable cars. Our country must set itself the goal of scrapping an old and one of the most polluting car fleet in Europe and it is in this sense that we encourage support for families with higher incomes Bass”. The government’s overall action, therefore, must be aimed at “incentivising production and protecting it from unfair competition, moving from an old concept of the Europe of consumers to a new Europe of producers, concentrating resources to encourage investments by companies that guarantee productivity and work”.
