The car market in the European Union it is affected by the decline that has been recorded in all the main countries of the world and shows a clear decline for the first time in the year: in the month of March, in fact, registrations were down by 5.2% .

The numbers

Acea’s numbers show a clear setback:“The timing of the Easter holidays had a negative impact on sales last month in most EU markets, including the four largest”, the company explains in a note. In total, there were 1,031,875 registrations compared to 1,089,017 in March 2023. Also including the United Kingdom and EFTA countries, the drop in the month is reduced to 2.8% (i.e. 1,383,410 registrations compared to 1,423,222).

Returning toEuropean Union, all four major markets took a step back, with -6.2% in Germany, -4.7% in Spain, -3.7% in Italy and -1.5% in France . Despite this, however, the numbers for the first quarter remain decidedly very positive, with almost 2.8 million registrations (+4.4% compared to the same period last year). On the front lines, Italy and France, up by 5.7% compared to the January/March 2023 period, followed by Germany (+4.2%) and finally Spain (+3.1%).

Power supplies

Overall, electric cars lose (from 13.9% to 13%) and petrol and diesel cars, which combined reach 47.8% of the market against 51.8% in 2023: hybrids do well, up from 24th, 4% up to 29%.

Going into the specifics of the European Union, there is a clear collapse of electrical, which recorded a -11.3% (134,397 units): of the three most important BEV markets, the best numbers were recorded in Belgium (+23.8%) and France (+10.9%). The decline was heavy in Germany, which recorded -28.9%. In the first quarter, 332,999 new electric cars were registered (+3.8% compared to 2023).

Encouraging numbers for hybrid (+12.6%): of the three main Hev markets, France (+29.6%) and Italy (+8.3%) recorded positive data, while Germany is also in decline in this area (-0.3%). In total, 299,426 new vehicles were registered

Instead, I step back plugins: 73,029 new Phevs were sold in March (with a decline of 6.5% and a 7.1% share of the total car market). Of the three main markets, Germany (-4.5%) and especially Belgium (-15.3%) performed poorly, while in France there was an increase of 3.6%.

Registrations of powered cars are also decreasing gas (-10.2%): the step backwards is evident in France (-17.7%) and Germany (-3.4%), while Italy goes against the trend with its +5.7%. The monthly market share is 35.4%, compared to 37.4% in 2023.

Worse still are the numbers diesel, which plummeted by 18.5%: negative data in all markets, namely France (-32.1%), Spain (-38%), Italy (-27.6%) and Germany (-0.5% ). Registrations were 128.
