Bank of Italy, revenue grows without new taxes: the government’s latest victory

Boom in revenue into state coffers without new taxes: the government’s triumph was certified by Bank of Italyaccording to which only in the month of February the tax revenues accounted for in the state budget were equal to 39.4 billion, an increase of 13.2% (4.6 billion) compared to the same month of 2023. Unequivocal data that belies the left-wing narrative according to which this is a government friendly to tax evaders.

The increase in revenue is due to the fact that the GDP, on a cyclical basis, grew more than in other years. Added to this is also a certain rigor in the controls and attitude of the government. In any case, these are important data for the markets, for Europe and also for the Ministry of Economy, called to make medium-term forecasts on the economic trend after the approval of the Def. As regards the first two months of this year, however, Bankitalia estimates that tax revenues were equal to 85.9 billion, up 8.7% (6.9 billion) compared to the same period last year.

However, the data on public administration debt is less good, which in February increased by 22.9 billion compared to the previous month, amounting to 2,872.4 billion. An increase due both to the requirement (14.1 billion) and to the increase in the Treasury’s liquid assets (8.6 billion, to 42.8); but also to the overall effect of discounts and premiums on issuance and redemption, the revaluation of inflation-indexed securities and the change in exchange rates (0.3 billion).
