BMW X3 2025, first contact with the prototype

There is less and less left until the unveiling of new BMW X3. The fourth generation of the German SUV, thanks to excellent commercial successes since the first model (2003-2010), is completely updated: it is more precise, sporty, aerodynamic and technological, with the introduction of highly advanced active driving aids that maximize safety. We had the opportunity to preview some pre-series examples – real prototypes camouflaged, although the general fine-tuning can be considered almost complete – on public roads and inside the proving ground of the German brand a Miramasin France.

BMW X3 2025, it’s all new

As visible from the photos and videos, the test specimens – one plug-in hybrid and the declension ad High performance “designer” M – they don’t show much. Behind camouflage wrapping and false panels, however, some can be noticed elements similar to some models of the new direction of the Elica brand. Starting from the front, with Pointed LED headlights similar to those of the last ones X1 and X2. However, the change in terms of shape is evident: the new BMW X3 is lower and wider, for increased road presence; furthermore, as reported by the technicians, the roadways they were widen maintaining wheelbase unchanged (2.86 metres). Great work also on the aerodynamic side: the optimization of the underbody, as well as solutions such as door handles flush with the bodywork, new “Air Vent” system on the grille e rear spoiler with “aeroblade” which embraces the rear uprights, made it possible to obtain a drag coefficient (Cd) of only 0.27. Despite the heavy internal coverings, one can then recognize familiar details such as the Double Curved Display (combined with BMW Operating System 9) and, in general, a similar setup to the “sisters” already mentioned.

First test

The prototype testing allowed us to “touch” all the progress achieved from BMW in terms of driving dynamics, ride comfort and active safety. Necessary premise: all our sensations concern non-definitive specimens and of which nThe technical data have not been declared. We can tell you, however, that the improvement compared to the third generation is tangible. As seen behind the wheel of the plugins hybrid, driving precision increases thanks to a completely redesigned suspension system, stabilizer bars and bushings, together with a new steering – now belt-driven – capable of truthfully transmitting everything that happens under the front wheels. The use of tires with low rolling resistanceFurthermore, it reduces consumption and polluting emissions. The high performance version M (at 99% will be X3 M50idriven by six cylinders 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline), raises the bar even further by adding specific structurestiffened structure e rear self-locking differential. The whole while increasing ride comfortfor an incredible balance between performance and driving relaxation.

Advanced Adas

We conclude by talking about the latest generation active driving aids. As many as 40 Adas present, aided by new and sophisticated sensors – radar long range front and rear, four short range radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and six cameras, just to name a few – and extremely effective. We had the opportunity to experiment with themdedicated areawith mobile mannequins and fake cars that they simulate real scenarios: even at high speeds (higher than those imposed by EuroNCAP) the accident has always been averted. We just have to wait for the official launch. Production will begin in the summer.
