Monza, the alarm from the consultation: “Cars are speeding in Viale Libertà, the Municipality must intervene”

A road that is being transformed into a racetrack. THE residents of Viale Libertà, in Monza, brought to the attention of the council the habit of pressing the accelerator too much by motorists and drivers of trucks and vans heading from the center towards Viale Stucchi and the city limits.

“Radgers” that disrespect speed limits can be seen not only at night (when a law worthy of the Wild West is in force) but also during the day, jeopardizing the safety of vulnerable users such as pedestrians and cyclists. There was no shortage of bickering between those who asked, gesturing with their hands, to slow down and drivers who were not inclined to do so. “Until now – it was said in the consultation – we limited ourselves to rude gestures and less than gentlemanly words. We wouldn’t want anything more serious to happen.”

The dual carriageway and double lane road invites those behind the wheel to be more daring on the pedal without, however, realizing that they are passing through a built-up area in whose vicinity there are schools, the Rubinowicz primary school and the Mapelli Institute. Many of the older students reach their school by bicycle, pedaling along Viale Libertà.

“The only slowdown – observed a citizen who attended the consultation– consists of the roundabout on via Prampolini. In the rest of the avenue there is nothing that limits speed.”

The Council, taking advantage of the presence of the mobility councilor Giada Turato, asked for intervention from the Palace to dissuade the “runners”. “We had already been told that speed bumps cannot be placed on this road because they would put ambulances in difficulty –underlined the coordinator Valter Artelli– but they could adopt other solutions, for example on-call traffic lights”.
