New withdrawal methods, this changes the “cost” of operations. You could risk some unpleasant surprises.

Banks and the range of services they offer have changed a lot in recent years. In reality, the ways in which Italian citizens rely on banks and use their services have also changed. This is due to a series of events that have characterized what banking work is.

In a general way we talk about the digitalisation of banks, with a growing use of electronic payments disadvantage of those in cash. This has resulted in a progressive disappearance of ATMs, i.e. the branches through which it is possible to proceed with cash withdrawals.

For many months there has been nothing but talk about this phenomenon, about a clear change in the attitude of Italian account holders who prefer to pay with cards and debit cards, rather than withdrawing from bank branches. In a climate of this kind, what happened is easy to imagine, the branches and some bank branches closed or merged with larger ones and new withdrawal methods were introduced. In fact, today it is also possible to withdraw cash from some points of sale and tobacconists.

Despite all this, in some countries the ATM they are still widely used and a singular case has happened recently.

37 million unduly withdrawn

37 million were illegally withdrawn from the CBE Bank of Ethiopia. One of the largest in the area, due to a problem with the ATMs, they had an undue free withdrawal of money, never had before. Huge damage would result if the withdrawn money were not recovered.

The money could be withdrawn from the account holders even if there were no funds present in their account. In short, a real embezzlement.

Here’s what account holders need to do

The news of the technical problem obviously spread very quickly and so here it is almost 40 million euros they were withdrawn or transferred to other accounts, before the bank became aware of the problem. It seems that a large part of the withdrawals occurred by students and very young people.

The credit institution therefore asks all those who were involved in the incident to return the money irregularly withdrawn.
