The “Rebirth Library” at the Forlì hospital: books for cancer patients and their families

A space dedicated to reading and well-being has been inaugurated at the Morgagni-Pierantoni Hospital in Forlì in the waiting room of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. The Rebirth Library – with its 200 volumes which increase day by day thanks to donations from citizens – is a place available to anyone: women waiting for a visit, hospitalized patients, family members, carers, but also healthcare professionals. The project is organized by the Loto Odv association, which supports women with gynecological tumors, and sponsored by the AUSL Romagna

It is not a simple library, nor a bookstore or a book-crossing point, nor “just” a reading space: the Renaissance Library is all these things together and much more. This is a project conceived byLoto Odv association with the patronage ofAUSL Romagna which focuses on cancer patients and the beneficial power of books, inaugurated this morning atMorgagni-Pierantoni Hospital in Forlì in the waiting room of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department directed by prof. Luca Savelli (on the third floor of the Vallisneri pavilion).

I am over 200 books donated by private citizens available to patients, those accompanying them or visiting them. The Renaissance Library was born from the idea that patients’ time can be marked not only by medical visits, exams, therapies and meals for those who are hospitalized, but also by an encounter with a novel, with a testimony of life, or with a poetry capable of creating a space for mental escape from illness.

This morning he cut the ribbon Director of the Giorgio Martelli Hospital together with prof. Luca Savellito Andrea Amadori – gynecologist of the scientific board of Loto Odv – to nursing coordinator and ai doctors and midwives of the department, with the volunteers of Loto Odv. The project – which celebrates 11 years of Loto Odv, founded in June 2013 – aims to support the work of doctors, nurses and hospital staff in order to ‘lighten’ the hospitalization and waiting times for patients as much as possible. The reading service for hospital patients will also be activated shortly: Loto volunteers will be available to hospitalized women to give voice to the books they have chosen.

“The time to read, like the time to love, expands the time to live, wrote Daniel Pennac: the benefits of reading are known, especially in terms of improving stress management – points out Liviana Lombardi, head of the Loto Odv Forlì territorial committee – By making these volumes available we would like to offer a bit of escape, reflections, glimpses of light, important stimuli to activate in patients a powerful desire for recovery, a decisive element in the success of the therapy”.

Three elements were fundamental for the realization of the project: the volunteers, the spaces made available by the Morgagni-Pierantoni Hospital and the donations of books from private citizens. The rules of the Rinascita Library are few and simple: no registration is necessary to borrow books; books can be freely taken by anyone who wishes, taken home and returned whenever desired; to share the pleasure of reading with other people, patients and citizens are invited to bring a book to enrich the library; if you particularly liked a title you can leave a comment in the Loto Odv “Rebirth notebook” which is on the shelf.

Lotus Odv (lotonlus.org) is a non-profit association with the aim of filling the information and awareness gap on gynecological cancers. It was born in 2013 in Bologna on the initiative of a group of patients and friends: today it has numerous offices throughout the country and collaborates with volunteers, patients, families, doctors, healthcare institutions, research institutions and testimonials. With its activities, Loto Odv supports women affected by female tumors by guaranteeing reception, orientation and accompaniment of patients in oncology day hospitals.
