It was inaugurated on 21 June in Maranello, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, Ferrari’s e-building signed by MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects and designed to meet the most innovative production needs of the Prancing Horse company.

The new building, for which the studio developed the external facades and the main internal spaces, is an example of industrial architecture and stands within the new northern expansion area of the production site in Maranello (Modena).

«The project for Ferrari’s new e-building in Maranello outlines an industrial architecture that is also a vector for the redevelopment of a substantial part of the city’s production area, thanks to structures designed to achieve the highest levels of energy and technological performance with a low environmental impact, the use of renewable sources and the creation of new green areas” he has declared Mario Cucinellafounder and project director of MCA . «Innovation and design – he continues – intertwine to enhance the project at all scales, from the building to the facades, together with the identity of the places in which it is inserted, in a territory recognized throughout the world as Italian excellence in know-how industrial and productive”.

The new building intended for the production of cars with combustion engines, hybrids and the future electric Ferrari, is parallelepiped in shape and has a total height of 25 metres, spread over two main levels and two mezzanine floors, for a total surface area of 42,500 m2.

The continuous facade and bright, it is made up of opaline windows interspersed with transparent glass portions, which guarantee a high internal diffusion of natural light and high visual comfort. Furthermore, recalling a recognizable image in line with Ferrari’s aesthetic canons, the translucent external cladding allows the imposing mass of the building to be dematerialized, which reflects the surrounding landscape during the day, while at night it transforms into a luminous lantern.

For the concept of the facade MCA followed the logic of Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) which facilitates the on-site assembly of components and maintenance operations, creating efficiency and reducing the environmental impacts linked to the materials used and processes. This made it possible to reduce the environmental impacts linked to the materials used and the processes, also promoting efficiency in the phases following construction and/or assembly.

The processes underlying the proposed concept are in line with Ferrari’s commitment to optimising production with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and containing resource consumption.

Attention to the Reducing environmental impact led the design not only of the facade but of the entire building. The complex was designed to achieve a class A2 NZeb performance level, thanks to the use of recyclable materials certified for minimal emissions of substances into the environment and to the over 3 thousand solar panels with a maximum overall power of 1.3 MW installed on the roof that guarantee its power supply.

The building envelope also ensures high thermal performance, typical of the most modern office buildings but unusual for a production building. Finally, a storage tank allows rainwater to be collected and used in the building.

Inside the building, Ferrari has designed spaces that maximize the well-being of people.

The building, with production lines arranged on two main levels so as to halve land consumption, is characterised, in particular, by the presence of ergonomic workstations and relaxation areas, conceived by the Ferrari team with the use of materials and colours that convey a sensation of visual well-being.

Green areas are found both inside and outside the factory, such as the large roof garden overlooked by the production activities and the approximately 200 new trees designed to mitigate the summer heat island. Furthermore, thanks to a specific road design, interference between pedestrian paths and heavy traffic has been reduced.
