The exhibitions not to be missed in Rome this summer

This summer too, Rome is transformed into an extraordinary artistic stage, thanks to a series of exhibitions that promise to enrich the cultural panorama of the Eternal City. From the first retrospective dedicated to a contemporary artist in the spaces of the Borghese Gallery, to the monographs on the great Italian protagonists of art between the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Emilio Isgrò, Carla Accardi and Giovanni Anselmo, without neglecting the program of events and meetings in the setting post-industrial slaughterhouse, the variety of artists and movements represented offers a unique opportunity to explore different currents of the last century, confirming once again the central role of Rome as one of the world capitals of art. AT THE MAXXI THE RETROSPECTIVE ON GIOVANNI ANSELMOThe exhibition entitled Giovanni Anselmo is organized by the prestigious Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in collaboration with MAXXI. Beyond the horizon which until 6 October presents thirty works by one of the protagonists of Arte Povera, coming from important international institutes and private collections. Incorporating natural elements and reflections on time and space, the works exhibited in the monograph set up in the famous Roman museum trace an integral path in the career of Giovanni Anselmo, a few months after his death. EMILIO ISGRO’S DELETIONS AT THE GNAMSit is entitled Emilio Isgrò: protagonist 2024 the monographic which collects a selection of works by the Sicilian artist famous for the “erasure” technique, with which he eliminates parts of written texts to create new works of art. Inaugurated last May 8th and open to the public until December 5th, the exhibition dedicated to him at the National Gallery of Modern Art invites visitors to reflect on the power and persistence of words in our society. The exhibition will also be enriched by an important program of collateral initiatives, among which the Erasing Lessons imparted by Isgrò himself to the students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome stand out. THE CONTEMPORARY ART OF LOUISE BOURGEOIS LANDS AT THE BORGHESED GALLERY From 21 June to 15 September, the Borghese Gallery welcomes great contemporary female art for the first time ever with the Louise Bourgeois exhibition. The unconscious of memory. Exploring some of the recurring themes in the Parisian artist’s works, such as those of identity, change and memory, the exhibition presents twenty famous sculptures, ideally divided between the internal and external spaces of a museum that Bourgeois had the opportunity to admire in distant 1967. THE PALAZZO DELLE ESPOSIZIONI CELEBRATES CARLA ACCARDIThe centenary of the birth of Carla Accardi, one of the icons of contemporary Italian art, is celebrated by the Palazzo delle Esposizioni with an important retrospective which brings together many of her most representative works, characterized by lively contrasts chromatic, signs and geometric shapes. Exceptionally extended until September 1st, the Carla Accardi anthology retraces the salient phases of her artistic career, from her early abstract art to the large canvases created in the last years of her life.THE CULTURAL INITIATIVES SCHEDULED AT THE SLAUGHTERHOUSEFor the third year, the Mattatoio di Roma returns to host the rich cultural program of Spazio Griot which, starting from last June 20th, animates the Pelanda area with a rich schedule of initiatives, exhibitions and meetings. This year’s edition, entitled Riverberi, will revolve around the concept of “power”, a theme that is investigated starting from different artistic approaches, well exemplified by the video installations created by Candice Breitz, Ligia Lewis and Monica de Miranda, as well as through an interesting public program that will continue throughout the summer.[Immagine in apertura: Giovanni Anselmo, Particolare (dettaglio), 1972.
