Carl Mydans, a giant of photography in the liberation of Siena

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Siena, in the rooms of the Accademia dei Rozzi, the photographic exhibition by Carl Mydans will take place which takes us back to 3 and 4 July 1944.

The Camp welcomed General de Monsabert first, and subsequently many officers and diplomats engaged in the Italian Campaign, among cheering people and flags hastily taken out from the Contrada headquarters.

Carl Mydans (1907-2004) entered the city with de Monsabert’s jeep, LIFE correspondent, followed the liberation of Siena following the French troops, documenting their advance in the south of the province with a series of over 200 photographs.

We present a selection, in which the photographer pays attention not to the grandeur of the generals but to the daily victories and difficulties faced tirelessly by the men.

In the days following the liberation of Siena, Mydans followed the French in Provence who left for the United States in November 1944. In 1945 he documented the landing of General MacArthur in the Philippines. It will always be Carl who photographs the surrender of the Emperor of Japan aboard the Missouri.

His career continues: he tirelessly immerses himself in every international drama, from the devastating Fukuy earthquake of 1948 to the Korean War; he continued with international recognition for his work until the last years of the twentieth century.

Inauguration Monday 10 June, 5.30 pm. The free entry exhibition by Carl Mydans at the Accademia dei Rozzi on liberation will remain open from 10.30am to 12.30pm / 3.30pm to 6.30pm from 10 June to 4 July (excluding 24 June afternoon and full day on 2 July).
