In Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, millions of refugees and displaced people are disproportionately affected by a severe food crisis that collectively affects more than 31 million people.
«This is the worst drought I have ever seen. We walked for eight days to get here. I had nothing to eat for my children. They cried and cried. I thought about taking my life rather than watching them starve in front of me.”.

The words of Shamsa Amin Ali, 38, a Somali refugee in Kenya, are emblematic of the suffering experienced by 31.7 million people caught in the grip of acute food insecurity. A very serious problem which disproportionately affects the most vulnerable communities, i.e. refugees and displaced people living in fragile countries such as Kenya and where conflicts and violence are ongoing such as Ethiopia and Somalia.

To shed light on the ongoing tragedy and to raise funds needed to save millions of people, UNHCR is launching the campagna “Let’s listen again with which he asks everyone to donate to help ensure essential survival aid, food, emergency shelter, clean water and medical care for millions of refugees and displaced people in the Horn of Africa.

The funds raised will support UNHCR’s humanitarian response to refugees and displaced people in these countries, in particular to provide essential life-saving aid, food, emergency shelter, clean water and medical care.

UNHCR continues to work every day to support refugees and displaced people in these dramatic scenarios. It provides direct economic assistance to give families the possibility to buy food and not run into risk situations, guarantees emergency shelter and medical care. Together with partners it contributes to food distributions, for example with baskets composed of cereals, legumes and other essential items and also provides specific treatment for acute malnutrition for children and pregnant women.
