At least 63 people have died and more than 100 have been hospitalized after drinking adulterated alcohol sold on the black market in a district in southern India, according to a new toll provided June 27 by local police.

The previous toll, given on June 24, was 56 victims.

The contamination incident occurred in Kallakurichi district in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

After drinking the toxic alcohol some people lost their sight and others died on the street while trying to reach the hospital.

Many poor workers, especially employed in the agricultural sector, are in the habit of buyingarracka popular drink in South and Southeast Asia, in plastic bags of 60 rupees (about 0.70 euros).

They buy it on the street because it is cheaper than what is sold in shops.

Political parties in Tamil Nadu have blamed each other for the massacre. Some opposition MPs were expelled from the local parliament after they staged a protest in the chamber demanding the resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Executive Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin.

Every year hundreds of people die in India after drinking adulterated alcohol produced in clandestine distilleries.

To enhance the effects of these drinks, manufacturers often add methanol, which can cause vision loss, liver damage and death.
