Emmanuel Macron calls elections in France for June 30th. After the first estimates released at the closing of the polls, favorable to the far right (Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National), the French president took the floor to announce the dissolution of the National Assembly and the calling of new elections on 30 June and on July 7. “At the end of this day I cannot pretend nothing happened,” Macron said. His party, Renaissance / Renew, was, in fact, doubled by that of Jordan Bardella. «For this reason – he underlined – I have decided to give you back the choice of our future parliamentarian through the vote. France needs a clear majority to act in serenity and harmony”, concluded the head of the Elysée. In a few moments Macron will sign the decree for the legislative elections, which will be held on 30 June for the first round and on 7 July for the second. The last vote for the Assemblée nationale elections took place in June 2022, two months after Macron’s confirmation in the presidential elections. «I can only welcome this decision. We are ready to govern if the French want to trust us”, commented Marine Le Pen. During his speech, Macron underlined how the vote «does not represent a good result for the parties that defend Europe. The advance of nationalists and demagogues is a danger for our nation, but also for our Europe, for France’s place in Europe and in the world”, said the French president after the victory of Le Pen’s party.

Mélenchon: «Macron no longer has any legitimacy»

For the leader of France Insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Macron “was right to announce the dissolution of the National Assembly, because it no longer has any legitimacy”, said the leader of France Insoumise (LFI), commenting on the calling of new legislative elections by the president, after the defeat of his party in the vote for the renewal of the Strasbourg Parliament.
