Nghiaa local resident, recounts the devastating scene where water was barely visible under a blanket of dead fish, saying that it had not rained in the reservoir for weeks, causing a significant drop in water levels.

What happened? Reservoir managers allegedly dumped water to save crops downstream and then attempted to dredge and pump mud to create more space and water for fish, but these efforts failed, resulting in that terrible massive die-off, with at least 200 tons of fish they may have died according to local reports.

Authorities are now investigating the incident and working to remove the dead fish from the reservoir, which it serves as, among other things water source for crops in Trang Bom and Vinh Cuu districts. This heat wave, with temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius in Dong Nai province, broke previous records set in 1998.

The extreme weather is also affecting neighboring Cambodia, where temperatures could reach 43 degrees. In response, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered schools to consider closing to protect teachers and students from the heat.
