New front of conflict between Israel and the UN. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, spoke out harshly in an interview with the BBC about Israel, blaming Tel Aviv for its significant responsibility for the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Indeed, a recent United Nations-backed report offered concrete statistical evidence that the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is turning into a man-made famine. This report has increased pressure on Israel to fulfill its legal responsibilities to protect Palestinian civilians and allow adequate supplies of humanitarian aid to reach the people who need it.

“Israel has a significant responsibility and it is plausible that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza. If intent were proven, it would be a war crime. Evidence has emerged that Israel is slowing or withholding aid delivery. I condemn Hamas’ attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers on October 7, but no warring party should shirk responsibility for its actions, including its attempt to withhold aid from people in need in Gaza. All my humanitarian colleagues keep telling us that there is a lot of bureaucracy. There are obstacles. There are obstacles… Israel is significantly to blame. I can only say that the facts speak for themselves… I understand that the situation must be controlled, but it cannot take days to do so”, Turk’s statement, which immediately triggered heavy reactions from Israel.
