Phia Sabanthe interpreter of Helaena Targaryen in House of the Dragonadmitted that she was shocked when she read the script for the first episode, A Son for a Son, of season 2.
The actress spoke as a guest on the official podcast of the series created by HBO and was able to discuss the scene “Blood and Cheese” in which his character is forced to sacrifice his son Jaehaerys.
Talking about how far in advance I got to know the details of this episode of House of the Dragon 2Phia Saban explains that, clearly, since the series was based on Martin’s books, he was aware of the matter, but that it’s one thing to know it, and another to actually read everything on the written page:
If you give people an idea that you’re doing something like House of the Dragon, and maybe they know what it is, and you say, “Oh, I’m playing Helaena,” they inevitably say, “You know what happens to your character, right?” I was told this by the people sitting next to me on the train!
But nothing prepares you for opening the script and realizing, “Okay, they do this in episode one.” What I really liked when I read it in the script was how simple they made it. It’s all set in the present, in the immediate. And, you know, there’s not too much dialogue. They’re not trying to exaggerate.
