A recount of the votes in the municipal elections on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June has established that in the municipality of Campobasso, the regional capital of Molise, there will be a run-off.

By mistake, the centre-right mayoral candidate Aldo De Benedittis had already been declared elected with 52 percent of the votes: however, the platform of the Ministry of the Interior Eligendo had not also taken into account the so-called disjoint votes, i.e. those given to a candidate in the City Council that was not included in the lists of the chosen mayoral candidate. After the recount, De Benedittiis’ votes fell to 48.3 percent, thus bringing him below the 50 percent threshold needed to be elected in the first round in municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants.

As for other municipalities, a runoff will therefore be needed for the election of the mayor of Campobasso, which will be held on 23 and 24 June between De Benedittis and Marialuisa Forte, a school director supported by the centre-left who obtained 31.8 percent of the votes . Campobasso has been governed by the 5 Star Movement since 2019, when Roberto Gravina was elected, who however resigned in 2023 after running for president of the region (he lost and was elected to the regional council).
