The reference is to his father’s past in the Resistance. The former mayor of Milan had already spoken about it some time ago: “My father fought the fascist regime with conviction and fought against the Nazi occupation. He fought for freedom, he was a proud liberal partisan, but he worked with all partisan groups. He paid with a very long imprisonment, and he never even wanted to talk about this imprisonment again, because he was marked, it is a mark that remained with him for life.” And again: “My father’s story is on the one hand great pride, on the other hand great emotion because I know how painful it was for dad to fight a war that he considered unjust”.
