Cogne flood: 499 people evacuated by helicopter

I am 499 people which yesterday, Sunday 30 June, were evacuated from Cogne following the flood that isolated the area on Saturday 29th. Evacuations continue today.

Yesterday, the regional air rescue, with 73 rotations, transported 420 people to the valley: take-off from Cogne and landing at the Aymavilles sports field. With 19 rotations, the Fire Brigade and Financial Police took 79 people to the valley.

Most of the evacuees were families who had reached Cogne by car for a holiday period. The vehicles with which the tourists reached the location at the foot of the Gran Paradiso are blocked and will not be available for a long time, because it will take a long time to restore traffic.

The witness

“We feel sorry for the people of Cogne for what happened – comments a Lombard family who had just landed in Aymavilles -, it was scary, but luckily there were no deaths. We go home by public transport, because our car is stuck in town. We will rent one so we can go to work. It remains a bad experience.” “Should we return to Cogne? Certainly! We love nature, this valley and the kindness of the people. And then we will do it out of solidarity, to help these good people get back on their feet.”
