PADUA – The family of Margherita Salvucci, the 28-year-old doctor who was taken from her life by a fatal wave on Thursday afternoon in the natural pools of Seixal, on the island of Maderia, Portugal, returned yesterday. The girl, originally from the Marche region but who had been in Padua for years, where she had graduated in Medicine and where she was specializing in Psychiatry at the hospital in via Giustiniani, was on vacation with her parents and sister.
The family members arrived at Fiumicino airport around 3pm yesterday, then headed to Colmurano in the province of Macerata. With them also Margherita’s boyfriend, Marco Romanelli (Venetian psychiatrist), who immediately after the tragedy joined Margherita’s parents in Portugal. Last night the Salvucci family reunited with their relatives. It will be necessary to wait at least two or three weeks for the body to be returned. The autopsy is expected to be carried out on Wednesday.
THE VICINITY
The mayor of Colmurano, Mirko Mari, will meet the Salvucci family today. A second prayer vigil is also being organized in the town. The former mayor of Corridonia, Nelia Calvigioni, who lost a daughter several years ago in a car accident, is close to her mother Ornella Formica. “Earthly life – she wrote on Facebook – is a mystery. Dying like this is unacceptable. I am very sad, too many lives broken prematurely in the best years. Ornella, courage to you and your family. Even the entire community of the Marche Democratic Party rallies around Ornella Formica and her family. «We share – say the representatives of the Democratic Party – the profound pain, with the hope in our hearts that the memory of Margherita can, over time, bring some comfort and strength to move forward with the spirit and joy that we he knew how to give.” Margherita’s death must serve to ensure that similar tragedies never happen again in the natural pool where the girl lost her life. There was only one sign indicating the lack of a lifeguard. “We should raise the wall that delimits the ocean from the natural pool and put up warning signs about the danger of the place.” This is the message that Ornella Slavucci and her family are sending.
THE RECONSTRUCTION
«On Thursday afternoon Margherita and Maria Ester – said Ornella – entered the natural swimming pool of Seixal where the water was very calm and where there were a lot of people. At a certain point the waves got bigger: Mari Ester went back, Margherita instead stopped, a much larger wave arrived and took her away into the ocean. She tried to swim for several minutes. Then an Italian tourist, a firefighter from Siena, Manuel Solms, when he realized that the ferry with the doctor would not arrive for twenty minutes, dived in with his life jacket. As soon as he reached her Margherita fainted. He kept Margherita with her head above water for the entire time she was waiting for help.” The next morning the young woman died in hospital.
