After weeks of drought and water shortages, the Delhi area in India was hit by an early monsoon. The city was hit by torrential rains and strong winds, causing significant damage.

The bad weather, among the various damages caused, caused part of the roof of the Indira Gandhi International airport to collapse, causing the death of one person and the injury of six others. The budget is still provisional.

The accident occurred around 5 a.m., when a portion of the roof covering the taxi and car lanes at Terminal 1 collapsed under the weight of the water. The supporting pillars also gave way, crashing into several parked cars. The only confirmed victim was in his taxi at the time of the collapse.

Flights departing and arriving from Terminal 1 have been diverted to the other two terminals of the Indian airport. As of last reports, 42 flights have been cancelled and 192 have been delayed. The two airlines most affected have been IndiGo and SpiceJet, with many passengers forced to reschedule their trips.

Rainfall was exceptional, with 228 millimetres of rain falling on the capital in 24 hours, mostly in the early hours of Friday morning. Delhi’s streets were transformed into rivers, with many major arteries, including those near the new Parliament building, completely flooded and impassable.

Many colonial-era bungalows, inhabited by ministers, judges, generals and senior bureaucrats, were flooded. Delhi’s first and only tunnel, located near the Pragati Maidan trade fair complex, also suffered flooding, further complicating the traffic situation.
