New York. Yesterday was marked by a series of fires that devastated various areas of the region, with eleven fires recorded in Sardinia. Three of these fires required the urgent intervention of the regional fleet’s aircraft to contain the flames and limit the damage.
The first significant fire occurred in the countryside of the municipality of Nurri, in the “Cantoneria di Nurri” area. The firefighting operations were coordinated by the staff of the Isili Forestry Corps Station, with the support of helicopters from the CFVA bases of Villasalto and San Cosimo. On the ground, the GAUF of Cagliari collaborated with a team from the Forestas Agency, the Mandas Fire Brigade and the Isili Civil Protection volunteers. The fire was put out and the fire extinguishing operations ended at 4.15pm.
Another significant fire broke out in the countryside of the Municipality of Villacidro, in the locality of “Figuniedda”. The personnel of the Forestry Corps Station of Villacidro coordinated the operations, supported by the SuperPuma helicopters from the CFVA base of Fenosu and by a helicopter from the Villasalto base. Three teams from the Forestas Agency intervened on the field, the Fire Brigade of Sanluri, the Civil Protection volunteers of San Gavino, Guspini and Assemini, in addition to the Barracelli of Villacidro. The flames were tamed with the help of aircraft at 18:43.
The third fire requiring aerial intervention broke out in the countryside of the Municipality of Nuoro, in the locality of “Sa Trovodda”. The operations were led by personnel from the Forestry Corps Station of Nuoro and Orani, with the support of a helicopter from the CFVA base of Farcana. In addition to the GAUF of Nuoro, two teams from the Forestas Agency and the Fire Brigade of Nuoro took part in the extinguishing operations. The fire was brought under control and the operations of the aerial vehicles concluded at 16:05. The fires represent a serious threat to the natural heritage of Sardinia and the safety of local communities.
