Tomorrow, June 28, 2024, a happening dedicated to gender violence will take place at the Catania Piazza Lanza prison, intended for the inmates present in the institution: ”Che coSs’èl’Amor? Conoscere e riconoscimento la violenza di genere”. The common thread of the event will be the perception of the phenomenon of violence against women, through the comparison of the inmates with some experts on the subject. The initiative, as reported by the director of the prison Nunziella Di Fazio who promoted and organized the event, arises from the awareness that “gender violence represents a socio-cultural fact that is as widespread as it is little known, with deep cultural roots, which has truly dramatic proportions and a frightening hidden element, just think that according to the most accredited statistics only eight women out of a hundred who suffer some form of violence manage to be intercepted. We need to acquire greater expertise and intervene (as stated in articles 16 and 18 of the Istanbul Convention), immediately before the phenomenon comes to light”.
According to the director, this is an important project in the prison context, as prison represents a privileged place where one can also undertake an educational path for prisoners aimed at preventing the phenomenon. The idea of talking about this topic inside a penitentiary institution finally arises from the anamnestic collection, carried out over the years by the operators, which reveals how many prisoners, men and women, grew up in contexts in which different forms of violence were present and from the fact that this last aspect often translated into dysfunctional behaviors with respect to emotional relationships and the disparity of roles. On the basis of these considerations, Dr. Di Fazio wanted to take the first steps to implement actions to stem the phenomenon and avoid recidivism.

The thematic analysis of violence against women, scheduled for tomorrow, will serve to find out what services are available in the area and how the legislator treats attackers and protects victims. The following will participate in the happening, which will be led by director Di Fazio: the president of the Thamaia anti-violence centre, Anna Agosta, who will explain in particular what gender violence consists of and what the main services offered by the anti-violence center are; the psychologist from the same center Carmen Bosco, who will illustrate the most common psychological effects that victims of violence suffer and the risk signs that a victim of violence must learn to recognise; Viviana Santanello, director and advertising Art Director, trainer on new technologies and new media, institutional and business communication consultant, who will discuss how the images transmitted on television screens and digital devices can influence the construction and diffusion of the stereotype of gender and what are the effects of the representations of “showgirl women”, “image women”, “ornament women” or “superwomen” on the perception of the role of women in society; the accountant Simonetta Murolo, president of the accountants’ council, who among the forms of gender violence will deal in particular with the more subtle one which is “economic violence”, which is based on a relationship in which one party tries to limit and control the economic independence of the other, thus limiting their autonomy; the matrimonial lawyer Santa Talio, who will illustrate the regulatory framework and in particular the measures envisaged for perpetrators of violence and the measures to protect women. Finally, the journalist Elena Paba, correspondent for Rairadio uno and grr, creator and coordinator of the campaign “Come un’onda con la violent sulla donne”, will participate in the event, with a live broadcast on radiouno which will begin at 10.05 am, during which it will also be broadcast the message of Pope Francis, dedicated to the Rai campaign and the interviews carried out with operators and prisoners.
