Ukrainian border guards prevented about 20 recruits from fleeing the country. The group was detained near the village of Kelmenci, close to the border with Moldova, authorities said, cited by DPA.

The recruits came from different parts of Ukraine and planned to escape on foot during the night. Those who helped them escape would receive 12,000 euros each.

More than two years ago, Ukraine declared martial law and ordered mobilization to defend itself after a full-scale Russian invasion. Since then, men aged between 18 and 60 who are subject to military service can only leave the country in exceptional circumstances, the DPA notes.
