Fancy Food: Mediterranean Diet boom from +67% oil to +193% pasta

Americans “crazy” for the Mediterranean Diet with exports to the USA of products symbolizing the all-Italian food style which in the last ten years have recorded triple-digit increases in value: from +67% of olive oil to +193 % some pasta. This is what emerges from an analysis by Coldiretti on Istat data prepared for Summer Fancy Food 2024 and released on the occasion of the initiative at the Farmers Market Grow Nyc in Union Square in New York, on the first day dedicated to the Mediterranean diet in the USA, in the presence of the president of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini, of the CEO of Filiera Italia Luigi Scordamaglia and of the Director of Campagna Amica Carmelo Troccoli.

At Mediterranean Diet school. In the most famous farmers’ market in the Big Apple, together with the Consorzio mozzarella di bufala campana DOP and that of Grana Padano DOP, the farmers of Coldiretti got to work involving New York families in the preparation of homemade pasta and in the knowledge of some of traditional peasant recipes that enhance the truly made in Italy products.

A Mediterranean Diet lesson with the special participation of Mimmo La Vecchia, one of the historic Italian cheesemakers who, for the first time, brought the art of real buffalo mozzarella to New York, showing live the different stages of production of one of the main products of our Made in Italy promoted by the Protection Consortium.

The sales of pummarola&co. in the States they have practically tripled (+133%) but also cheeses, from Parmigiano Reggiano DOP to Grana Padano DOP, have almost doubled with +86%, according to Coldiretti analysis on Istat data. And wine is also increasingly present on American tables with a 63% increase in value.

But the symbolic product remains olive oil, with the United States having overtaken Spain into second place among the world’s largest consumers, with 375 thousand tons, and by 2030 it could even surpass Italy.
