The State Police announced that, in collaboration with the Milan Prosecutor’s Office, it was a gang that operated between Italy and Albania was defeated and dismantled and requested payment of unpaid bills relating to electricity and gas contracts never signed.

As explained by the Police statement, it all started with a complaint filed by a Milanese priest who had literally been harassed by calls from call centers asking “with insistence and aggressive tones” the payment of unpaid bills for electricity and gas contracts that were never signed.

This lawsuit led to the discovery of a criminal system made up of two electricity and gas supply companies and numerous call centers based in Italy and Albania, specialized in fraudulent activations of energy supply contracts, extortion and self-laundering of illicit proceeds. The investigation saw the participation of the Postal Police, as well as the Special Prosecutor’s Office of Tirana.

According to what emerged, “the scams carried out by the suspects started from the numerous and insistent phone calls (also made early in the morning and late in the evening) with which the data of the victims were collected, who were convinced they were talking to employees of the ARERA (Regulatory Authority for Energy Networks and Environment) or energy companies with which they had stipulated regular contracts for the supply of electricity and gas. This information was collected using pretexts such as, for example, phantom roadworks that had severed the electrical cables or gas pipes and due to which it was necessary to temporarily activate a new contract with an “agreed” operator”.

In cases where the scam was not successful, the operators used the data acquired during the phone calls to still activate the contract with false signatures. “In other cases, when the activation procedure required a voice recording, the victim’s voice, recorded during the phone call, was artfully manipulated with audio editors or artificial intelligence apps so that the necessary words could be heard pronounced by the unaware user. personal data and the various “yes” in response to the questions of the telephone operator in charge of collecting consent”: on these pages we have also talked about the yes telephone scam in the past.

After a few months, the victims received very high payment requests for contracts that were never signed. At this point the increasingly aggressive and intimidating phone calls began in which fake debt collectors requested payment. This also occurred through threats also reported by elderly people.
