On stage he spoke almost to shake off these terrible days. “It’s a nightmare,” he says with an interpreter next to him. Taranjeet Singh is a witness, he is 30 years old, he does not speak Italian. He is also an Indian agricultural laborer like Satnam. They were in the same camp on the afternoon of Monday 17 June. He was at least a hundred meters away from where the event occurred but he remembers everything. «I heard the screams of the employer and also of Satnam. I told his employer to call the ambulance and call for help but instead he said that he was dead anyway and that help couldn’t come in the countryside and he did what he wanted. The three of us were at work, there was Satnam, his wife, and they were distant, Satnam – he says – was behind the tractor where the employer was. I heard shouting and the employer started swearing and threatening.” The witness’s story is very clear. “I saw everything and started telling them to call the ambulance but the employer went towards the van and loaded Satnam, his wife and also his arm.”

Taranjeet Singh retraces his history in the Agro Pontino similar to that of many of his compatriots. «When I started working the employer was a good person. I am an illegal worker and I earned 5 euros and 50 cents an hour. Now, after all this that has happened, no one allows anyone who doesn’t have documents to work anymore.”
