The inhumane end reserved for Satman Singh has also brought to light another indirect form of exploitation of Indian agricultural workers, namely the more subtle, but no less serious, conduct of those who profit from the condition of necessity of foreign workers through leasing houses. Just as in the case of the thirty-one year old who died due to the consequences of the accident at work and above all due to the delays in emergency services caused by his employer in an attempt to remove him from the farm: not only was he employed without a contract, but he and his wife did not they were in possession of a residence permit, they were all clandestine, so whoever had given them the house committed a series of crimes, including criminal ones, in order to pocket extra rent. Non-negligible conduct, which Carabinieri investigators are examining in a sort of appendix to the main investigation, that of the dramatic accident in the fields and the responsibilities of agricultural entrepreneurs.
Satman and his wife lived about seven kilometers from the farm where he died. For some time they had found precarious accommodation in a small villa in Via Genova, in the Castelverde subdivision just outside Borgo Bainsizza, on the border with the municipal area of Cisterna. It is a large house that the owners have divided into several apartments, rented to various agricultural workers.
