Meeting in the Prefecture on fire prevention: the forest fire brigade group is arriving in Pantelleria

Summoned to the Prefecture, on the topic of the 2024 forest fire prevention campaign, representatives of the Pantelleria Island National Park Authority, the municipal administration, the Carabinieri, the Fire Brigade, the Trapani Forestry Inspectorate and the Regional Civil Protection Department.

The meeting was opened by the extraordinary commissioner of the Park, Italo Cucci, who illustrated the current conditions, in the midst of the summer season. Cucci’s response to the Prefect’s request for reassurance on the fact that the island’s forest fire prevention was under control with the preparation of the activities foreseen for each individual involved. In this regard, a week ago, 30 volunteers were trained by the Civil Protection Department who will be able to participate in monitoring, surveillance and prevention activities. The lookouts of the Forestry Corps are already operational as a permanent safeguard in prevention activities.

An equally positive note, following the continuous requests to the Ministry of the Interior by Commissioner Cucci, came from the firefighters, who have foreseen, in addition to the airport patrol, an additional forestry land team which will soon be operational as an implementation of the currently limited forces. A critical issue highlighted by both the Park and the municipal administration, reiterating the need to provide ad hoc competitions.

Finally, the Prefect requested maximum attention by asking for the installation of cameras, following the example of SoS Valderice, which function as a deterrent and which enrich the instrumentation of the sentry posts by the municipality in order to be able to receive all the information, in order to allow optimal supervision of the island’s territory.
