Finnish Mikko Heikkila won the San Marino Rally

Finnish Mikko Heikkila won the 52nd edition of the San Marino Rally, the fourth round of the Italian gravel championship. The Toyota Yaris Rally2 driver dominated the race, winning 4 of the nine special stages on the programme. For Heikkila this is the second victory of the season which also means second place in the general classification. As per tradition, San Marino proved to be beautiful, challenging, a rally that delivered repeated twists and turns. The success of the Finnish driver was certainly facilitated by the retirements of Umberto Scandola and Alberto Battistolli. During the third test, the driver from Verona touched another car stopped along the route, damaging a rear wheel and was forced to retire. Same fate for Battistolli who overturned in the Lunano special stage. The only one who tried to worry Heikkila was Tommaso Ciuffi, making his debut with the Skoda Fabia, RS version. The Florentine driver set the best time on SS 8, then did well to manage a second place which is worth the lead in the Tricolore Terra classification. Completing the San Marino Rally podium was the Austrian national champion Simon Wagner, author of a great comeback, marked by the best time in two timed sections. Fourth and fifth place for the Skoda Fabias of two Italian crews, Enrico Oldrati, navigated by Giacomo Ciucci and Matteo Gamba with Nicolò Gonella on the notes. Of note is the seventh place overall for young Matteo Fontana at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta. The home riders also did well. Ninth place for Angelo Pucci Grossi from Rimini and twelfth for Jader Vagnini from San Marino with a “first series” Skoda Fabia Rally2. An exciting rally and an increasingly exciting general classification with four drivers in just 5 points. Tommaso Ciuffi with 39 points precedes Mikko Heikkila, Umberto Scandola and Alberto Battistolli. Next appointment of the Tricolore Terra, October 27th, with the Vermentino rally.
