An affront that ended in war. In Spain a group of Poor Clare nuns Of Beloradoa small village in the province of Burgosin the north of the country, was excommunicated by the local archbishop Mario Iceta after having rebelled against the Church of Rome. A decision that was taken philosophically by the nuns, as it derives from “a mature, thoughtful and conscious reflection” and from the desire to “be Catholic”. This new split echoes that of Monsignor Viganòwho recently opposed the Vatican’s accusations of schism by declaring that he will not submit to what he calls a “show trial.”

In this new affair, those who made the first move were the so-called “chocolate nuns“, a nickname that comes from their mastery of producing chocolate-based desserts, just over a month ago. Around mid-May, Isabel de la Trinidadthe abbess of the community that matters 15 nuns had made public a 70-page Catholic manifesto in which he communicated the decision of break away by the Catholic Church to place itself under the protection and jurisdiction of Pablo de Rojas Sanchez-Franco, a Catholic excommunicated in July 2019 and founder of the “Pious Union of Saint Paul the Apostle”. L’archbishop of Burgos, Mario Icetain charge of managing the situation, had sent a first lifesaver to the Poor Clares: to deliver the keys of their monastery and present themselves in front of the Ecclesiastical tribunal to expose their position and avoid the worst. Both warnings were ignored and so, following the appointment deadline set for yesterday, June 22ndat 2pmIceta has officially decreed the excommunication of the nuns.

“The nuns separated from the Church of Vatican II because they want to be Catholicand they came to the conclusion that after the death of Pius XII all the others were false popes that they taught contrary doctrines to the Catholic faith,” their spokesperson declared José Ceacero adding that the Church of Rome “is teaching things that are not Catholic”. According to what leaked to the Spanish media, rather than a decision due to faith, the separation from the Church of Rome could be motivated by a controversy over a real estate transactionor the purchase of the monastery of Orduña, nei Basque country, run by the same community of nuns. Not only that, doubts were also raised about the role played by the abbess of the community, whose mandate expired on May 29, in convincing the other sisters. The abbess denied the accusations by publishing on Instagram some videos in which the Poor Clares are seen smiling, in harmony and in the company of their relatives.
