Iran, death sentence for rapper Toomaj Salehi overturned

There Supreme Court of Iran has the death sentence was annulled of the Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi. The announcement came late this morning from his lawyer. A supporter of democratic protests in the Islamic Republic, the 33-year-old was found guilty of “corruption on Earth” over his song lyrics.

Lawyer Amir Raisian, in communicating the wonderful news of the cancellation of the death penalty for his client, added that, according to section 39 of the High Court, the case will be referred to another court for reconsideration. “The Supreme Court also announced that the previous conviction Salehi’s six years and three months in prison it had not been legaldue to the existence of other sentences,” he explained from his X account.

Known simply as Toomaj, the famous rapper had become the voice of the protests who challenged the Islamic Republic in 2022. With his songs and his posts on social media he has always openly supported the ‘Woman, life, freedom’ movement, born after Amini’s death in 2022, while in the custody of the morality police. Salehi had been accused of “incitement to sedition, assembly, conspiracy, propaganda against the system and incitement to revolt”, according to his lawyer.

The young man had also reported having suffered torture in prison. Many international artists have made appeals for his release. Several hundred people, including members of the security forces, were killed and thousands arrested during protests held between September and November 2022 in Iran, which were bloodily repressed by the regime. Until now, nine people were executed in relation to those events.
