A serious road accident occurred around 11.15 am in the municipal area of Morbegno, on the provincial road number eight to the San Marco Pass. The victim was a motorcyclist descending from the Pass, close to reaching the city of Bitto, when he lost control of the vehicle and fell to the ground. Not only that, because the fall was so disastrous that it caused him to fall down the steep slope for about thirty metres. In the middle of the bush.

The incident occurred approximately 150 meters above the penultimate hairpin bend. The motorcyclist’s travel companions, a group of seven people, witnessed the accident and activated the rescue services. Frightened, they immediately grasped the gravity of the situation and raised the red code alarm. The operators of Areu, the regional emergency and urgency agency, and the firefighters of Morbegno arrived on site and had their work cut out for them in reaching the injured man and carrying him back on a stretcher to the street.

The man was conscious, but with a significant fracture in his right leg. Once stabilized on site he was immediately transported by helicopter to the Pope John XXIII major trauma center in Bergamo where he arrived around 1pm. There he underwent all the necessary tests and, for now, the prognosis is reserved for him . The Morbegno Carabinieri arrived on site to carry out the usual investigations.

They did not disclose the identity of the injured man, but in all likelihood he belonged to a group of two-wheel enthusiasts from the Bergamo area. Among the many who, as soon as the weather turns nice, get on their motorcycles to travel the Alpine passes of our province, and perhaps link them together. Just like mountaineers do with peaks. From San Marco, to Maloja, to Stelvio and on at this rate. Grinding kilometers and kilometers and stopping every now and then to rest and enjoy the beauty of the places.

This weekend several groups have already moved, even if the weather is not the best and dangers are just around the corner. A minimum amount of slipperiness on the road surface, especially when cornering along narrow hairpin bends, can play nasty tricks. Even more so on mountain routes that are not always delimited by parapets like the one in question.
