The location of the alleged murderer is being examined by investigators. The carabinieri maintain maximum confidentiality on the matter but from the little information that has leaked out it emerges that his father-in-law, probably at the height of an argument, hit him with several shots. The argument that ended in blood was apparently triggered by family issues. Mastromatteo was also involved as a volunteer in the local civil protection. The whole community had great respect for him and his father-in-law.

«I know both families – says mayor Raffaele Scicio – they are respectable people, integrated into our community. There had never been any problem. I also know his father-in-law, who retired a couple of years ago and was previously an employee of the regional agency for irrigation and forestry activities. I really don’t know what could have happened.” Both families live in the same building. Other family members may have witnessed the murder. 118 intervened immediately and they were unable to do anything to save the 39-year-old’s life. Many inhabitants of the small Gargano community, shaken by the event, went to the house where the crime took place. Many knew the victim and there is anger and amazement on social media. «He had never hurt anyone», is the most frequent comment.
