The breakage of a damaged right pin and the resulting joint that connects to the steering caused the fatal skid of the bus crashed from an overpass in Mestre on October 3, resulting in the death of 22 people.

This emerged today during a meeting with the Venice Prosecutor, Bruno Cherchi, which announced the conclusion of the expert phase and the transmission of the documents to the parties involved for subsequent technical evaluations. The prosecutor’s report highlighted that the road barriers, due to their age and lack of maintenance, were unable to withstand the impact. Cherchi declared: “The causal link between the failure of the steering and the state of the barriers needs to be established.” At the moment, the suspects are three officials of the Municipality of Venice and the CEO of La Linea.

The last moments from the internal cameras

The images of the last moments of life of the passengers of the ‘Yutong’ bus were documented by a video from the on-board cameras acquired by the Prosecutor’s Office as part of the investigation into the accident. This was communicated by the Prosecutor Bruno Cherchi. The magistrate asked the parties involved, who will have access to the video for investigative purposes, “not to publish or disseminate it”. Cherchi underlined: “The images are crude, there are minors and people dying, it is of no use to public opinion, I appeal to common sense.”

The images document that the bus was traveling normally on the overpass, when it began to drift to the right, banging several times and leaving pieces of it on the barriers, and then crashing.

The driver was healthy

The driver’s behavior was judged to be correct. According to the magistrates, the reports on the electronic instruments on board and the images of the vehicle confirm this conclusion. The autopsy and further forensic examinations on the heart of Alberto Rizzo, who also died in the accident, have ruled out that the 40-year-old was taken ill before the crash. From the analysis of the data on the mobile phone and the images from the cameras, it appears that the driver received emails and messages at those times, but never used the mobile phone while driving. The autopsy showed that Rizzo died due to serious head injuries suffered when the bus fell from the overpass.
