The golden age of Piazza Mancini is linked to Carlo Molfese, the impresario who had the idea of creating the Tenda Theater right in the large space of the Flaminio district. From there, a very successful story is born, spanning musicals, drama, comedy, folk dances, circus, ballet, light song, operetta, rock concert, melodrama. From “Rocco Scotellaro”, played by Bruno Cirino, to the latest performances by Dario Fo, the history of the Teatro Tenda has seen alternating artists of the caliber of Carmelo Bene and Vittorio Gassmann, up to the trio “La Smorfia”, with Lello Arena, Enzo De Caro and Massimo Troisi. But also a young Renato Zero, with the show Zerophobia. Among the frequenters, he counted figures such as Eduardo De Filippo and Federico Fellini. But the show that has most characterized the activity of the stage in Piazza Mancini is certainly that of Gigi Proietti, “A me gli occhi, please”, which remained on the bill for four consecutive months in 1977 and became, with over 250 thousand spectators, one of the greatest successes of Italian theater of all time.
THE CONCERTS
The musical history of the structure is also vast, which accompanied the entire decade of activity of the Teatro Tenda, from 1976 to 1986: over the years, performers such as Ornella Vanoni and Gino Paoli (who re-proposes Piero Ciampi’s repertoire) pass under the tent, singer-songwriters such as Lucio Dalla and Francesco De Gregori, young talents such as Stefano Rosso and Loredana Bertè, groups such as the New Trolls, popular performers such as Mario Merola and the British heavy metal group Iron Maiden. In 2016 the council of the II Municipality decided to place a plaque in Piazza Mancini to remember «the presence and activity of the Teatro Tenda and the significant cultural and social value in the city, regional, national and international context». This initiative, however, has not yet been implemented.
