he had whooping cough but was sent home

The 12-year-old boy who died in Turin last February after three visits to the emergency room in Chivasso was suffering from whooping cough but was sent home. This was confirmed by the medical-legal report ordered by the Ivrea Prosecutor’s Office which is investigating manslaughter against unknown persons.

He had whooping cough little Andrea Vincenzi, the deceased 12 year old child at the Regina Margherita children’s hospital in Turin on the night between 21 and 22 February after three visits to the emergency room in Chivasso. This was confirmed by the medical-legal report ordered by the Ivrea Prosecutor’s Office investigating the tragic death of the baby footballer. As established by the medical examiner in the report filed with the Prosecutor’s Office, the boy had contracted a very contagious infectious disease of bacterial origin, whooping cough, but no one had realized the seriousness of his health conditions.

It is a disease that can lead to death if not correctly diagnosed and treated as it is responsible for serious pneumonia. As the autopsy on the twelve-year-old had previously established, little Andrea was the victim of a severe pleural effusion caused by pneumonia infection which led to very serious respiratory failure. The new report filed with the Prosecutor’s Office, as revealed by La Stampa, does not, however, go into the merits of specific faults in the lack of diagnosis. The expert, however, “considers it appropriate to have specialist integration by a consultant specialized in pediatrics in order to evaluate the adequacy of the minor’s clinical management during visits to the Chivasso emergency room”.

According to what has been established so far byinvestigation for manslaughter, which remains without suspects, in the three visits to the emergency room, which occurred between 19 and 21 February, the doctors understood that the twelve-year-old had pneumonia but sent him home with an antibiotic treatment, considering the case not serious. “From the first access on the night of February 19th, appropriate antibiotic therapy was prescribed for the microorganism involved” the ASL To4 had reported in recent months, reconstructing what happened and adding: “On the morning of February 19th and on the day of February 21st haematochemical and instrumental tests relating to the clinical situation were performed. On 21 February, the tests and stable clinical conditions allowed him to be discharged home with appropriate therapy”.

In reality, as the forensic examination revealed, the situation was so serious that one lung weighed only 100 grams. A condition that led the minor to severe respiratory failure and death. It remains to be seen whether the situation worsened suddenly or whether something went wrong in medical examinations and diagnoses.
