(ANSA) – CASTROVILLARI, JUNE 19 – He forced his employees, Italian and Indian, to work 11-12 hours a day, without weekly rest, for a daily wage of 28 euros and making them live in a dirty container with no heating, with the mattresses placed on the floor. For this reason, the carabinieri of the Castrovillari Company and the Labor Inspectorate Unit of Cosenza seized the company managed by a 57-year-old who is under investigation for illicit intermediation and exploitation of labour. The investigations, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Castrovillari directed by Alessandro D’Alessio, and conducted by the Carabinieri through observation, control and shadowing services, would have made it possible to ascertain how the employees of the agricultural and cattle breeding company worked 7 days a day. 7, including holidays, with grueling hours that went from 4:00 am to 8:00 pm, with a two-hour lunch break and occasional, sporadic and short breaks during work.
The monitoring, carried out in the period between August and October 2023, allowed the Carabinieri to ascertain, “with high statistical reliability”, how the “typical” working day was 11/12 hours of work per day, without any weekly rest. Furthermore, during the investigative activity it emerged that some regularly employed workers lived inside a container, owned by the company owner, in poor sanitary conditions, consisting of a room used as a bedroom with three workstations, two of which with a mattress placed on the floor, without a bed base and structure, and one made with only blankets. A room considered unusable and habitable, without heating systems which, also due to the dirt, would have made the living conditions unhealthy, irregular and lacking in minimum standards of comfort. To prevent the situation from continuing over time, the entire company sector, the immovable and movable assets, including approximately 300 cattle and various vehicles, with an estimated value of approximately 2 million euros, were seized in advance in execution of the decree issued by the Investigating judge of Castrovillari and entrusted to the control of a judicial administrator, to prevent the owner from being able to reorganize and resume control of the company.
