Double tragedy of immigration. There ship Nadir of the German NGO Resqship rescued a wooden boat full of water in which there were 61 migrants, 10 of whom were found dead in bottom of the boat flooded. 51 were evacuated, taken to Nadir and subjected to initial medical treatment. Two of them were unconscious in the hull.

“The team intervened with an ax to break the hull and enter inside the boat – the NGO says – Rescue arrived too late for 10 people. The unconscious people are currently receiving medical treatment and are awaiting an urgent emergency evacuation. Our thoughts are with the mourners. We are angry and sad.

In a few hours this is the third rescue for Nadir. First, a wooden boat reported by Alarm Phone and with 62 people on board was towed by the NGO, in agreement with the authorities, towards Lampedusa until the arrival of the Italian Coast Guard. Then another emergency: a boat full of water and petrol with 27 people on board. The crew of the Nadir distributed life jackets until the Coast Guard arrived.

From this night also the Coast Guard is engaged in the search for any missing persons following the sinking of a sailing boat with migrants on board, presumably departing from Türkiye. “The activity – the Coast Guard explains – was started following a ‘may-day’ launched by a French pleasure craft, sailing approximately 120 miles from the Italian coast, at the limit of the SAR areas of Greece’s competence and of Italy which, after reporting the presence of the half-sunken boat, recovered 12 migrants on board”.

Having received the mayday, the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of the Coast Guard in Rome immediately diverted to the scene two merchant ships sailing nearby, an ATR42 aircraft of the Coast Guard and the CP305 and CP326 patrol boats stationed in Calabria. Frontex assets also intervened on site. The 12 castaways, first transshipped by the French unit onto a merchant ship, were recovered aboard the CP305 which headed towards the port of Roccella Jonica. Here the migrants were disembarked and entrusted to the care of the 118 health workers. One of the migrants died immediately after the disembarkation operations. Searches in the area “are currently underway with assets from the Coast Guard and Frontex”.
