They were walking along Corso Europa, near Quinto, when a chasm opened under their feet, causing them to fall.

The asphalt suddenly gave way, causing the two to fall into a hole of about one and a half metres. The screams of the woman and her daughter, in the stroller, attracted the attention of some passers-by who did their utmost to help them get out.

The area has been cordoned off and the necessary checks are underway to understand the causes of the collapse.

THE UPDATE FROM THE MUNICIPALITY

After the first operations carried out by the emergency personnel of Asters together with Local policethis was done cordoning off of the sidewalk for a linear length of 50 metres, in the stretch between the intersection of Corso Europa and Via Monte Moro di Quinto up to the western corner of number 3 of Via Lorenzo Ghiglini.

In these hours Aster technicians are carrying out the first inspections in tunnel below, two meters high, approximately 2 kilometers long and characterized by the presence of a 600 mm diameter IRETI tube that runs up to Nervi and, bracketed on the side walls, the ducts for the optical fiber.

The inspections will serve to understand the scope and economic entity of the pavement restoration intervention, for which the construction of works in great urgency to speed up the return of the sidewalk to public use as much as possible.

The tunnel is contemporary with the construction of Corso Europa, in the 1960s.

Based on the first findings, the hypothesis is that the collapse could also be due to the microclimate created inside the tunnel where the hot air, in contact with the cold water flowing in the aqueduct pipe, condenses , interfering with the original reinforced concrete surface, equipped with internal metal carpentry which is affected by corrosion.

In the next few days, a total inspection will be carried out in various phases to verify where it is necessary to intervene, not only in the 50 meter stretch affected by the collapse and subsequent cordoning off, but along all 2 km of length of the tunnel.

“First of all, we are sorry that the sudden collapse of the pavement involved people and, in particular, a grandmother with her granddaughter, to whom we are close and who we spoke to by telephone to make sure of their health conditions – declares the municipal councilor for Maintenance Mauro Avvenente – The accident is due to the age of the buildings underneath the Corso Europa road, which also date back to around 60 years ago. The inspections underway in these hours will be followed by new investigations that will allow us to evaluate the extent of the damage and plan an important restoration intervention, through the mechanism of works in utmost urgency, for which I thank the deputy mayor and councilor Pietro Piciocchi. The Administration is fully focused on this problem, which we intend to resolve as soon as possible not only in the area directly impacted by the collapse, but on the entire tunnel that runs from Corso Europa to Nervi”.
